MODERN CARNIVAL GLASS
Late 1960's - 1984
Imperial Glass Company
of Bellaire, Ohio began production of Carnival Glass around 1909. Beginning in the late 1960s, Imperial Glass began reissuing some of their original patterns, and reproducing patterns from other makers using the original molds bought at auction when the original owner closed its doors. This led to a revitalization of interest in Carnival Glass. Modern (Contemporary) Imperial Carnival Glass will bear one of the following trademarks:
IG
(Imperial Glass 1950s-early 1970s)
LIG
(Lenox Imperial Glass 1972-1981)
ALIG
(Arthur Lorch Imperial Glass 1981-1982) - The ALIG trademark may be found on items produced by Summit Glass which bought the molds but did not remove the marks.

ELECTRIC BLUE IRIDESCENCE
CARNIVAL GLASS
is what we now call the IRIDIZED patterned pressed glassware that was introduced by the Fenton Art Glass Company in 1907, and produced by numerous glass makers up through the 1930s. Carnival Glass enjoyed a revival which began in the late 1960s. Bowls, plates, water sets (pitcher with tumblers), dresser sets (powder box, tray, pin tray, hat pin holder, cologne/perfume), table sets (sugar, creamer, butter, spooner), vases and specialty pieces were given a vivid and colorful appearance by a microscopically thin coating of metal applied as a solution of one or more metallic salts (stannous chloride [tin], iron chloride, lead chloride, et. al.) by hand-spraying the hot-from-the-mold glass. The carrying solution vaporized leaving the metallic salts to bond on a molecular level with the glass, producing a semi-metallic surface that reflected light in a rainbow of colors. Each salt or combination of salts produced a different color, with intensity tied to the thickness of the coating.
CONTEMPORARY CONDITION
refers to the lack of production issues in modern glassware, which plagued the glassware produced in the early 1900s. Modern glassware is relatively free of those production issues due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Art Glass is generally still hand shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
