This is an undated Hobo Buffalo Nickel carved by a contemporary artist, certainly inspired by our some of our American heroes.  The artist has used indelible ink to enhance the delicate carvings!!
In the era of the Great Depression, a lot of good men became hobos...riding the rails, searching for work.  Some of them spent the long lonely evenings carving designs into Buffalo Nickels.  They could sometimes sell or trade them for a nights lodging.  These came to be known as HOBO NICKELS.
Hobo Nickels were seen as just a curiosity for many years.  But with many of the original Hobo Nickels lost and the carvers now elderly or deceased,  some Hobo Nickels are now bringing hundreds of dollars at auction.  Used as lucky coins or conversation pieces, another boom in contemporary Hobo Nickels has arrived.  They are now gaining more popularity because they are more reasonably priced and provide another way to remember the history of the Hobo Nickel.
