    Description

Offered for sale is a fascinating piece of historical glass that you will cherish for many years.  This is a covered milk glass dish with an American eagle on top / on the lid.  This is a souvenir glass dish from right after the Spanish-American War, which the USA won.  We won Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines from Spain in 1898.  For this reason,  each glass egg on the lid has the name of a new "territory" or country that we won:  Porto RIco, Cuba, and the Phillippines.  On the base of the dish, it reads "The American Hen" on both sides and on the bottom it reads "PAT APPLIED FOR".  This was put out or marketed as a souvenir or a commemorative piece from our victory.  I identified this jar in the book "Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass" by Betty & Bill Newbound (copyright 1995, updated values 1998).  I believe that this was manufactured by the Flaccus Glass Company circa 1898 or 1899.  This is a great piece - not frequently found these days - but a great piece of Americana.  The condition is EXCELLENT with a pinpoint prick on one of the wings of the eagle - you can feel it with your fingernail.  Please see the photos, check my feedback, and ask any questions before making a purchase.  You will fall in love with this covered eagle!!  The base measures about 6 1/4 inches across.  The diameter of the bottom of the lid measures a tad more than 5 1/2 inches across.
